Social Isolation and Its Detrimental Impact on the Development of Developed Countries

Indeed, a general trend of social isolation is growing in developed countries and cannot be compensated for most aspects of development. Though technological advancement and urbanization have conferred immense benefits on both countries, they have at the same time created conditions for increased social isolation. The various negative impacts, which will be discussed herein to the development of developed countries, include economic impacts, health and community cohesion, education and innovation, public health, and policy making.

• Economic Impact:

While the same condition of social isolation affects some developed countries, it has huge economic impacts on those particular countries. In fact, there are those who stay in isolation, and they are found to suffer from various types of mental problems that decrease their productivity and increase the rates of absenteeism at workplaces. There are two such major mental problems reducing cognitive ability, which hampers working performance and lowers the economic growth of a particular country.

Social isolation may be contributing to health cost in that the burden of the chronic disease and mental disorder of the isolated individual requires intervention with medicine. From a health system point of view, such health service consumption presses on the health budget which would have potentially been used in accomplishing other development services.

•Health System

It also significantly affects the healthcare system of developed countries. Socially isolated individuals are at an increased risk of chronic illnesses such as cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, and high blood pressure. Such illnesses are treated through continued medical attention and hence increase the use of health resources.

Psychoses have been prevailing amongst solitary individuals. Those who feel very lonely tend to express major depression and general anxiety, amongst other mental disorders also. These have been on the rise recently hence pushing more and more people towards getting their treatments such as counseling, therapies, and psychiatric cares done. This results in an added pressure on the already burdened medical care system along with a rise in health care expenditures too.

• Social Cohesion:

Social isolation undermines the bonds of communal coherence and reduces social capital. Stronger ties of community are of importance for both social support, civic engagement, and well-being in general life. The socially isolated would seldom get themselves engaged in community activities, volunteer works, or other social events. Such a situation may bring on deterioration in community cohesion and belonging.

A breakdown of results for low social cohesion includes but are not limited to increased crimes due to detachment from the community; it gives one the potential to commit a crime. Loneliness and isolation may rise with individuals as they are denied of the needed social support which may initiate a vicious cycle of further weakened bonding in the community.

• Education

Consequences of social isolation in an educational context may be that, with regard to students themselves, lower achievements and low motivation could even lead to increased drop-out. Social contacts and relations during learning are quite relevant because of emotional support, encouragement, and opportunities to cooperate that students gain.

Students who stay behind in isolation will also be at a loss in learning other major social skills related to communication, cooperation, and conflict resolution. These three skills make for an important part of a student's academic and professional lives for many reasons. The fewer number of social relations with other individuals would render it difficult for the student to develop those abilities and could even have a dent on their potential future educational and career opportunities as well.

• Creative Ability and Innovativeness

Originality and imagination are the prime hallmarks of growth and development. A lot of inspirations are gotten from social interactions or collaborations that are made during innovating and creating something. On the other hand, with social isolation, there is limited social interaction which equates to limited sharing and collaboration on a particular project to work out a solution to a problem in a creative manner.

Social isolation dampens innovation since it robs the prospect of diversified perspective and experience. In order to come up with creative solutions, people need to come together with others, swap ideas, and challenge one another's ways of thinking. The effects that cannot occur in people living in isolation, together with a spur, are for innovation and economic growth.

•Public Health

It has been linked, in fact, to everything from depression and anxiety to cardiovascular diseases. Thus, any reduction in social isolation should be adding up to gains in population health and reductions in the burden of such conditions. Public health approaches that foster social connection and community engagement can mitigate adverse effects of social isolation.

Moreover, it may be associated with all the risky behaviors that is usually destructive for example smoking, excessive alcohol intake, and no exercise. These types of behaviors lead to a non-communicable disease and its cases have been risen with time. Therefore, addressing social isolation improves health since it promotes good behaviors of healthy lifestyle promote reduction of non-communicable disease.

•Conclusion

The big challenge with the developed country building is social isolation. These effects come nearly in all spheres: economic, health system, social cohesion, education, innovation, and public health. Conclusively, the economic outcomes of reduced productivity plus increased health costs, burden on healthcare-an immediate call to action is necessitated. Besides, erosion in social cohesion, failure in education, erosion of innovation are included as metrics of the widespread impacts of social isolation. Such effects call for a number of public health initiatives aimed at social connections and community engagement to balance them out in view of helping to build a healthier, more cohesive society. It is a pretty complex issue and one that the developed countries should recognize and try to overcome on their way to really sustainable development and improvement of the quality of life.
